Gathering, Growing, Giving

WHO WE ARE
The Grendel Group is a registered charity and is a values-based organization established in 2000. We are dedicated to providing programs and support for educational and ongoing meaningful work experience for people with cognitive and physical disabilities.
Grendel Group is somewhat unique and operates as an enterprising non-profit. This means that we operate business-like programs within a nonprofit model.

OUR LOCATIONS
The Grendel Group has two operational locations: Grendel Place and GrendelHOME. Grendel Place is our primary location for the delivery and operation of our day-programming, namely GRENDELicious and GRENDELGrow. Grendel Home is the location of our staffed residential facility. Please see below for more details.

GRENDEL PLACE
Our original place of operation was the basement of the United Church in Smithers. This location served us well as we grew in our experience and programming, but eventually we were in need of a new location. The then One Sky building at 3768 2nd Avenue in downtown Smithers became available and in 2011 and we purchased the property. We also had to complete extensive renovations to our “new” building, in which we installed a wheelchair-accessible commercial kitchen and bathroom. These upgrades, completed in 2012, further expanded our catering and gardening programs, as well as provided a space to further our theatre arts activities. In addition to increasing opportunities for individuals with disabilities,  this new location also provides a much-needed commercial kitchen for community groups to rent.

GRENDEL HOME
Grendel Home was created in 2023 in response to an identified need from community members for more supportive housing environments in the Bulkley Valley. It is set up to house two adults living with disabilities and is staffed 24/7.

Multiple community partners collaborated to make this dream a reality. We are particularly grateful to the Bulkley Valley Community Foundation, who provided a substantial grant towards the down payment on a house, as well as Community Living BC, who contribute ongoing funding for staffing and operational costs.

Potential residents are assessed by Community Living BC, who make referrals to Grendel. For more information please give us a call.
